The 3Rs in The Use of Kraft Drums
At Joaquin Alberto SA, we are committed to sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of the packaging industry. Kraft drums represent an efficient and sustainable solution, and we have adopted the 3R philosophy (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) as the backbone of our manufacturing process and use of these drums.
Below, we will explore how these practices apply specifically to our Kraft drums and the benefits they bring both economically and environmentally.
Reduce
Concept of reduce
The first R, Reduce, focuses on minimising the amount of materials and waste generated during the manufacturing process and use of products. Reduce not only contributes to the conservation of natural resources, but also reduces production and waste management costs.
Application in Kraft drums
At Joaquin Alberto SA, we have optimised our production processes to ensure that we use as little material as possible without compromising the quality and strength of our Kraft drums.
The kraft is purchased in reels of multiple lengths to suit the different heights of the containers to be manufactured, so that 100% of the formed cardboard is used. On the other hand, we have introduced technological improvements in the manufacture of the ‘canute’ that allow us to use 98% of the cardboard on the reel.
Reuse
Concept of reuse
Reuse means giving a new life to products once they have fulfilled their original function. This practice prolongs the life cycle of materials and reduces the need to produce new products.
Kraft drum reuse
Our Kraft drums are designed to be reusable. With a robust and durable construction, these drums can be reused multiple times for the storage and transportation of various products.
Many industries, from food to chemical, have adopted the reuse of our drums as standard practice, gaining both economic and environmental benefits, even if the practice is limited to the containers they receive with raw material from their suppliers, to be refilled with banal waste and thrown away.
It is not easy, but a cascading system of reuse needs to be developed, so that at the top of the chain is the pharmaceutical industry and the like, which have very demanding secondary packaging requirements.
In between would be other environmentally conscious industries, where the focus is not on the outward appearance but on the practical use of the packaging, ending up in the current landfill of banal waste.
With the new packaging law, this practice will be taxed financially for an as yet undetermined amount, but if the packaging is handed over to an authorised waste manager, the person who facilitates the management of the packaging will receive compensation.
Recycle
Concept of recycling
Recycling is one of the most effective ways to manage waste and conserve natural resources. Through recycling, materials can be transformed into new products, reducing the need for virgin raw materials and reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.
With Royal Decree 1055/2022, this practice of taking packaging to landfill will be taxed, but the fee can be recovered if the end customer delivers the packaging to an authorised manager for full recycling.
Recycling of Kraft drums
Joaquín Alberto SA’s drums are recyclable. The problem is that the two metal rings have to be separated from the cardboard trunk. Joaquín Alberto SA has the machinery to carry out this process. We are currently taking the necessary administrative steps to become authorised cardboard packaging managers.
We want to collaborate with our customers in the development of a circular economy that benefits society as a whole.
This not only reduces the environmental impact, but also supports the circular economy.
General benefits of the 3R philosophy in Kraft drums
Adopting the 3R philosophy in the use of Kraft drums offers numerous benefits:
- Economic: Reduced production and waste management costs.
- Environmental: Conservation of natural resources and reduction of pollution.
- Social: Promotion of sustainable practices and corporate responsibility.
Conclusion
The 3R philosophy is fundamental to ensuring sustainability in the packaging industry. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle are practices that, when applied correctly, not only benefit the environment, but also offer significant economic and social advantages.
We invite all companies to join us in this mission and adopt sustainable practices in their packaging processes.
At Joaquin Alberto SA, we believe that together, we can make a significant difference to our planet. Let’s embrace the 3R philosophy and move towards a more sustainable and responsible future.
FAQs
What are Kraft drums?
Kraft drums are containers made of kraft paper, designed to be resistant and environmentally friendly, ideal for the storage and transport of liquids.
What are the advantages of using Kraft drums?
They offer a more sustainable option compared to plastics as they are biodegradable and recyclable, thus reducing the environmental impact.
Is it costly to implement the 3Rs in Kraft drum handling?
While there may be an initial cost to implementing 3R programmes, in the long run, these practices can result in significant savings. Waste reduction and recycling can reduce waste disposal costs and generate additional revenue through the sale of recyclable materials.
What kind of additional materials can be used to complement the 3Rs on Kraft drums?
Biodegradable labels, eco-friendly inks and sustainable adhesives can be used to complement the 3Rs in the handling of Kraft drums. In addition, it is recommended to choose suppliers that use responsible production practices and certified materials.
